Dr Richard Gartrell is a Colorectal and General Surgeon working at Greenslopes Private Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital.

“Dr Gartrell has a broad interest in colorectal surgery and has experience in managing colorectal colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, pelvic floor dysfunction, endometriosis (with bowel involvement) and anorectal disorders.

He is trained in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. He is also a qualified General surgeon and looks after general surgical conditions including hernias, gallstones and appendicitis.

Dr Richard Gartrell is a Colorectal and General Surgeon working at Greenslopes Private Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Dr Gartrell graduated from medicine in 2010 and commenced surgical training in far North Queensland. His surgical training involved many relocations throughout Queensland but culminated in the completion of the General Surgical Fellowship and being awarded Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2020.

Dr Gartrell went on to complete a two-year research and clinical fellowship in colorectal surgery at Western Health Victoria, followed by a further two years of full-time clinical colorectal fellowship at the Royal Melbourne and Box Hill hospitals respectively.

During his tenure in Melbourne, he also worked at the renowned Peter MacCallum Centre and Royal Women’s Hospital, where he gained further training in complex colorectal cancer surgery as well as benign and malignant gynaecological pathology, including conditions such as advanced endometriosis.

Dr Gartrell has a broad interest in colorectal surgery and has experience in managing colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor dysfunction, endometriosis and functional bowel disorders. He has experience in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

His sub-speciality training was completed under the auspices of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) which is a competitive program developed to ensure high quality standards in colorectal surgical training are achieved across Australia and New Zealand.

Dr Gartrell is committed to ongoing research and supporting the academic careers of registrars and medical students. He received the award for most publishable research amongst his CSSANZ colleagues in 2023 and his publications are listed below.

He has held lecturer and examiner positions with the University of Melbourne during his time in Victoria, and still holds an associate lecturer position with the University of Queensland.

Dr Gartrell has a strong work ethic and enjoys the camaraderie and friendship within the surgical field. When he’s not at work he is busy either umpiring junior footy or cricket for his 2 sons or scoring for his daughter’s basketball team.
