What should I bring with me for my first consultation?

Greenslopes Surgeon xray imaging
  • General Practitioner or other specialist referrals. Both Dr’s Gartrell and Allison are specialists, so you can claim a Medicare rebate for their consultations, however this cannot happen without the referral form from you GP or other healthcare professional.
  • X-Rays and Pathology. Dr’s Gartrell and Allison require the X rays you were given as originals along with the reports for blood, urine and any other pathology that may be relevant to your condition.
  • Your Medicare, DVA and Health Fund details.
  • Accompanying person. Please feel free to bring a significant family member or carer to your consultation with our Greenslopes surgeon for support and to help with communication.

What if my condition is urgent?

For bowel cancer patients, it is very likely that your appointment date and time will be expedited. For other urgent conditions, it’s necessary to notify reception staff who will schedule your appointment appropriately.

What can I expect from my consultation?

There’s usually some paperwork to complete prior to the commencement of your appointment with our Greenslopes surgeon, so please arrive early to allow for this.

For example, your signature on a privacy statement is required allowing us to gather any information relating to your medical history and current conditions.

During your consultation, your surgeon will examine your documentation, pathology and ask you some questions relating to your condition. From this information and your responses, your surgeon will clearly and compassionately communicate some pathways forward including any risks that might be associated with them.

We encourage you to allow a family member or carer to accompany you because they can be very helpful especially in terms of helping with remembering what transpired.
